Prime Minister Abe asks Pope Francis to cooperate in North Korea issue

(VOVWORLD) -“Japan and the Vatican are partners who prioritize the realization of a nuclear-free world, eradicating poverty, promoting human rights, and protecting the environment,” said Prime Minister Abe Shinzo at a meeting with Pope Francis on Monday in Tokyo.

The prime minister said he hopes Japan’s cooperative relationship with the Vatican will expand after Pope Francis's visit.

Abe said he wants to gain the understanding and cooperation of the Vatican in preventing North Korea’s nuclear development and solving the abduction of Japanese people.

Pope Francis praised the meeting with Prime Minister Abe and promised to cooperate closely with Japan in dealing with those issues.
