(VOVworld) - The Paris attacks have helped the West understand that the priority in Syria is to fight the Islamic State, not to topple President Bashar al-Assad, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday. Lavrov reiterated Moscow's position that there is no way to resolve the Syria crisis peacefully without Assad, who he said represents the interests of a significant part of Syrian society.

In a related development, Russia’s news agency Ria Novosti quoted a statement by the Syrian Embassy in Moscow saying that Syria’s Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem will visit Russia next Wednesday.
