Demyanenko was among 21 officers of the Soviet Union sent to Vietnam in 1979 to help defend Vietnam’s northern border against Chinese forces. He lauded local soldiers, especially of the civil defense force, saying the Vietnamese people followed President Ho Chi Minh’s teaching that “nothing is more precious than independence and freedom.” Demyanenko stressed that, apart from a strong army and modern equipment, strength lies in patriotism and courage, two characteristics the Vietnamese and Russian people share. He said he defended Vietnam as his home country and considers himself a Vietnamese patriot.
