Saudi Arabia appoints first envoy to Syria in more than 10 years

(VOVWORLD) - Saudi Arabia appointed a new ambassador to Syria on Sunday, the kingdom's first envoy to Damascus since the two countries cut diplomatic ties in 2012.

Saudi Arabia reopened its embassy in Syria earlier this year.

Last April, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the restoration of consular services and aviation activities with Saudi Arabia, marking an important step in mending relations between the two countries.

In December 2023, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad appointed Ayman Soussan as Syrian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
