Simon Harris to be Ireland’s youngest PM

(VOVWORLD) - Irish Minister of Higher Education Simon Harris on Sunday became the new leader of the ruling Fine Gael party and is set to become Ireland's youngest-ever Prime Minister when the Irish Parliament convenes on April 9.

At 37 years old, Harris is the only candidate running for the party leadership position to succeed Leo Varadkar, who announced his resignation on Wednesday.

Varadkar currently leads Ireland's coalition government, thus his successor will step into the role of Prime Minister.

In a speech to members of the Fine Gael party following his election as its new leader, Harris vowed to support businesses, particularly small enterprises, and ensure safety, order, and law enforcement, and address immigration concerns.

He underscored his belief in public service, the transformative power of politics in improving lives, and helping people achieve a better quality of life.
