In the national report on the aging society in Vietnam, participants said the demographic transition is taking place faster than in other countries. Vietnam’s gold population structure has lasted for three decades and is now entering the aging process. This is significantly challenging Vietnam's social policies for the elderly.

Addressing the ceremony, Professor Dr. Pham Quang Minh, co-editor of the report, proposed some solutions as follows: “The most important thing is to let the elderly help themselves and protect themselves from risks.”

“Second, it’s necessary to firmly maintain the replacement fertility rate, bring the sex ratio at birth to natural balance, distribute population rationally, and improve population quality. Third, it’s essential to thoroughly implement the national target program for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountain areas until 2030. Fourth, new development models should be piloted with focus on coordinating social organizations, families, and market institutions to better serve the elderly in the new context,” said Minh.

According to the 2019 population and housing census, Vietnam’s aging index is 48.8%, which will increase in the coming years.
