The SCMP reported that besides underground rivers and lakes, a thriving jungle ecosystem, 400-million-year-old fossils, and spectacular geological formations, the cave is home to a series of rare species of flora and fauna found nowhere else on Earth.

In 2018, a group of British experts researching caves discovered that Son Doong Cave is at least 30% larger and much deeper than previously estimated.

The length of Son Doong Cave is currently measured at nearly 9 kilometers. In some locations the ceiling is up to 200 meters high and 160 meters wide, making the Son Doong the largest cave in the world.
