South Korea calls for increased deterrence on North Korea

(VOVWORLD) - South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Thursday vowed to build up the country's own defense capabilities as part of efforts to rid North Korea of its nuclear weapons, also saying his country will counter any provocation by the North with "strong punishment." President Moon also called for efforts to strengthen the joint defense capabilities of South Korean and US forces.

Earlier, US Senator Rand Paul proposed that China be allowed to keep a peacekeeping force on the Korean border as part of a solution to the North Korea’s nuclear threats.

On Thursday, Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs banned citizens from travelling to North Korea until further notice. Sri Lanka has also prohibited online visas for North Korean citizens as part of the UN Security Council sanctions against Pyongyang’s missile and nuclear development programs.
