South Korea, US discuss extended deterrence against North Korea

(VOVWORLD) - Senior military officers of South Korea and the United States held talks in Seoul on Monday to discuss joint efforts to beef up the US’s extended deterrence against North Korean threats, Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

Anthony Carullo, director of plans and policy at the US Strategic Command, reaffirmed the US commitment to continue providing extended deterrence for South Korea, explaining that extended deterrence refers to Washington's commitment to mobilizing the full range of its military capabilities, both nuclear and conventional.

South Korea is open to increased sanctions on North Korea, with cooperation from other countries like the US and Japan, if North Korea conducts another nuclear or other weapons test.
