South Korean investigators seek to extend President Yoon's arrest warrant

(VOVWORLD) - The South Korean Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) issued an official notice on Monday requesting that the police take over the execution of the arrest warrant for President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is facing impeachment related to his declaration of martial law on the night of December 3, 2024.

The request was made just one day before the arrest warrant for former President Yoon Suk Yeol expires.

On Friday the CIO suspended the execution of the arrest warrant after several hours of confrontation with the presidential security team at Yoon’s residence. According to the Yonhap News Agency, the CIO is now seeking to extend the arrest warrant for President Yoon.

The CIO has coordinated with the police and the investigation unit of the Ministry of National Defense to conduct a joint investigation into President Yoon's decision to impose martial law on December 3.

On December 31, a Seoul court approved a request from law enforcement agencies to arrest President Yoon Suk Yeol. As a result, he became the first sitting South Korean president to face an arrest attempt.
