At a conference to debut the Coordinating Council for the Southeast Region held in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday, the Prime Minister, who is also the Chair of the Council, stressed the need to accelerate the disbursement of public investment capital, improve the business environment, product quality and competitiveness, and expand the export market.

PM Chinh requested the region to focus on planning, maximizing the local potential, advantages, and competitive edge, saying breakthrough mechanisms should be proposed for the region to mobilize more resources, strengthen coordination in the logistics sector, enhance innovation, improve services, and consider investment in high-speed rail lines. The Prime Minister urged the region to work harder to become a regional hub of innovation and national data.

By 2030 the southeastern region aims to become a region with a high economic growth and an international hub of science and technology innovation, logistics, and finance.

The southeastern region covers Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh, Binh Phuoc, Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau province for an area of 23,551 square kilometers, accounting for 7.1% of the country’s total. It has a population of around 18.8 million people, or 18.9% of the national total. As the biggest economic hub of the country, the region holds a significant position and role in national socio-economic development.
