Syria rejects US allegations on chemical weapons

(VOVWORLD) - The Syrian foreign ministry on Saturday denied US allegations that it had used chemical weapons against rebel-held Eastern Ghouta enclave near Damascus, saying the accusations were “lies” without evidence.

In a statement, the ministry said the US’s allegations may undermine efforts to resolve the Syrian war through a peaceful settlement between the Syrians without foreign interventions. The Syrian government reaffirms its position against the use of chemical weapons, and Syria has handed over all its chemical arsenals to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the ministry added.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Friday the Syrian government had repeatedly used chlorine as a weapon. On Thursday, Washington said it was prepared to consider military action if necessary to deter chemical weapons attacks by the Syrian government.
