(VOVworld) - Thailand’s general election will be held in July at the earliest and in September at the latest, according to the Election Commission. After consulting with a total of 53 political parties, Election Commission Secretary General Puchong Nutravong said the EC proposed three election dates on July 20, August 17 or September 14. The EC also pledged to discuss the election date with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. On Tuesday, negotiations between the government and the opposition concluded without any breakthrough because of the absence of the main Opposition Democrat party. Prior to the meeting, Abhisit Vejajiva, Democrat leader and former premier, announced that his party will not attend the meeting for security reasons. Yingluck’s Pheu Thai party has officially criticized the opposition’s scheme to sabotage the election. In a statement, the Pheu Thai party accused many political parties of not wanting democracy and trying to create a political vacuum in order to bring a non-elected leader to power. The political crisis in Thailand has lasted for many months. The Thai government and parliament have been unable to operate fully since last December. Meanwhile, the Thai Constitutional Court has ruled the results of last February's election invalid.
