Ukrainian president calls for unilateral ceasefire

(VOVworld) – Ukraine will unilaterally halt its military operations to allow pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine a chance to lay down their weapons and leave the country.

President Petro Poroshenko said on Wednesday that ceasefire will be temporary halt during which the separatists must lay down their arms and restore order to the region. President Poroshenko promised to grant amnesty to those who lay down their arms if they have not committed any serious crimes. Poroshenko said the ceasefire is the beginning of a 14-point peace plan and must be supported by all parties in the eastern region.

On Tuesday, President Poroshenko phoned talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a more comprehensive ceasefire and how to control it.
