UN elects five new non-permanent members of Security Council

(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday elected Denmark, Greece, Panama, Pakistan, and Somalia non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for a two-year term.

Somalia will replace Mozambique in the seat of the African Group. Pakistan will occupy the seat vacated by Japan in the Asia-Pacific Group. Panama will represent the Latin American and Caribbean Group in the seat held by Ecuador. Denmark and Greece will occupy the seats formerly held by Malta and Switzerland.

Their new two-year term at the Security Council will begin on January 1, 2025 and expire on December 31, 2026.

The Security Council, the most powerful body of the UN, consists of five permanent members – the US, the UK, France, Russia and China – and 10 non-permanent members who are elected for a two-year term.
