UN passes resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza

(VOVWORLD) -The UN Security Council on Monday passed a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire for the month of Ramadan, and the immediate and unconditional release of hostages. There were 14 votes in favor, with the US abstaining.

The resolution underscores the urgency of increasing humanitarian supplies and strengthening the protection of civilians in Gaza.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a post on X that the resolution must be implemented because failure to do so would be unforgivable.

Arab countries unanimously welcomed the resolution and insisted that this must be a turning point to signal the end of the assault of atrocities against Palestinian civilians and bring humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Countries have called on relevant and influential parties in the conflict to comply with the new resolution and international legal regulations, including the Human Rights Law.

Israeli media has reported that the months-long negotiation sponsored by the US, Egypt, and Qatar to reach a new ceasefire in Gaza was deadlocked because Hamas won’t accept the continued presence of Israeli combat units in Gaza during the ceasefire period.

A senior Hamas official said the US is the main cause of the bankruptcy of the negotiation process because Washington has failed to ensure the necessary objectivity of a mediator by always showing excessive favoritism to Israel.
