The meeting was held at the request of Algeria, who represents Arab countries at the Security Council, and was backed by Slovenia, a non-permanent member of the Security Council.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the attack a dramatic mistake.

The airstrike was strongly condemned by the international community. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the air strike shows that no place in Gaza is safe anymore and this horrific situation must end.

Josep Borrell, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said: "I condemn this in the strongest terms. It proves there is no safe place in Gaza. And this attack took place immediately after the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to stop all military activities in Gaza".

The EU's top diplomatic official said that in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the EU will reinstate its Border Assistance Mission at the Rafah border gate to facilitate the distribution of relief supplies to the Gaza Strip.

The EU also supports the proposal by Arab countries to convene an international conference focusing on the "two states of Israel and Palestine” with the aim of advancing the implementation of a resolution.

Spain and the Republic of Ireland are set to officially recognize the Palestinian state on Tuesday, despite objections from Israel.
