It was one of the highest-level meetings between the two countries’ officials since a balloon incident earlier this year prompted Secretary of State Antony Blinken to postpone a planned trip to Beijing.

The White House statement said “this meeting was part of ongoing efforts to maintain open lines of communication and responsibly manage competition.”

The two sides had candid, substantive, and constructive discussions on key issues in the US-China bilateral relationship, global and regional security issues, conflict in Ukraine, and cross-Strait issues, among other topics, the statement said.

Xinhua News Agency quoted Chinese officials as saying that China considers the talks to be substantive and that both sides will continue to make effective use of this strategic communication channel.

US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns and Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang met in Beijing on Monday. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo are planning to visit China.
