US, Russia discuss extending New START arms treaty

(VOVWORLD) - The secretary of Russia's Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev, discussed extending the New START arms treaty in a phone call with new US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Russian news agencies reported on Monday.

The arms control treaty, which is due to expire on February 5, limits the US and Russia to deploying no more than 1,550 strategic nuclear warheads each.

A spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry said that experts from Russia and the US have started "practical" work on the treaty extension.
