US Senate passes resolution affirming peaceful power transfer

(VOVWORLD) - The US Senate on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution affirming its commitment to a peaceful transition of power after President Donald Trump refused to commit to one if he loses the November 3 election.

The resolution, sponsored by Senator Joe Manchin, affirms “the Senate’s commitment to the orderly and peaceful transfer of power called for in the Constitution of the United States”, noting that a disruption in the transfer of executive power “could produce results detrimental to the safety and well-being of the United States.”

President Trump has said that he expects the election to end up before the Supreme Court and that he will accept a Supreme Court ruling on the election result.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other top Republicans on Thursday repudiated President Donald Trump’s refusal to commit to a peaceful transfer of power, assuring American voters the lawmakers would accept the outcome of November’s election.
