Vietnam advances bid for non-permanent Security Council seat
(VOVWORLD) - The topics of Vietnam in the UN Security Council and sustainable peace topped the agenda of a workshop in Hanoi on Tuesday as Vietnam gears up for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council.

Nguyen Vu Tung, Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam said that with its potential and experience, Vietnam hopes to become a non-permanent member of the Council for the 2020-2021 tenure. Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung underlined the role of the Security Council and the importance of world peace.
“Peace has always been the international community’s biggest concern and the UN’s number one priority. The UN Security Council is assigned to safeguard world peace and security. Sustainable peace is a key component in Vietnam’s bid for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council during the 2020-2021 tenure,” said Mr. Trung.
Vietnam first became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in the period from 2008-2009. It was one of the first 10 countries to ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty). Since 2014, Vietnam has sent forces to the UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic and South Sudan.
