Addressing a debate on the humanitarian situation in Gaza at the 10th Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly in New York, Thoa called on all parties to protect civilians in line with international law, stressing that Vietnam strongly condemns attacks targeting civilians and essential civilian infrastructure.

Vietnam is calling for an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons, the unconditional release of hostages, and an end to hostile actions and violence in the escalating conflict between Hamas forces and Israel, she said.

Thoa announced the Vietnamese Government’s decision to donate 500,000 USD to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNWRA) to support the UN's efforts in Gaza, and said sustainable peace can only be achieved through a comprehensive solution based on international law and UN resolutions.

A vote by the UN Security Council on a resolution calling for a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel was pushed back again last Tuesday when parties failed to agree on the wording. Meanwhile the casualty count in Gaza continues to rise.

On Wednesday the Republic of Cyprus and Israel agreed to establish a maritime aid corridor to Gaza. Under the plan, aid goods will be transported to Gaza from the port city of Larnaca.
