Vietnam, China hold high-level military talks

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam and China have achieved many positive results from their defense cooperation relationship, the Defense Ministers of the two countries said at a talk in Vietnam's Lao Cai province on Thursday as part of the 8th Vietnam-China Border Defense Friendship Exchange Program.

Vietnamese Minister of National Defense, General Phan Van Giang and Senior General Dong Jun, Chinese Minister of National Defense agreed to thoroughly implement the joint statement on promoting “more substantive defense and security cooperation”, boost the exchange of high-level delegations, and maintain the effectiveness of annual cooperation mechanisms including a defense strategic dialogue, a border defense friendly exchange, and the joint patrol in the Gulf of Tonkin by the two navies.

Increased cooperation will focus on training, Party work, political work, enhanced defense industry, military trade, strategic research, United Nations peacekeeping, logistics, and military medicine.

At the end of the talks, the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding on establishing a hotline between the Vietnam People’s Navy and the Southern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.
