In his address, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh reiterated Vietnam’s determination to reduce the number of fishing vessels committing IUU fishing and end the violation by 2022 so the European Commission will remove its Yellow Card. Mr. Thanh stressed the importance of law dissemination so fishermen change fishing habits and become aware of their violations in order to comply with fishing regulations.

In October 2017, the EC imposed a “Yellow Card” status on IUU fishing and made 9 recommendations asking Vietnam to follow to remove its Yellow Card. After two 2 field trips to Vietnam in May 2018 and November 2019, the EC scaled down its recommendations to 4.
