Vietnam joins international effort in mine clearance, victim assistance

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam has always stood side by side with the international community in mine clearance and victim assistance, said Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of Vietnam's Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

Giang was speaking at a meeting with Senior Minister Ly Thuch, First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA), and Chair of the Fifth Review Conference of the International Convention on the Prohibition of Anti-Personnel Mines (Ottawa Convention), along with representatives of the convention implementation support unit and several related partners on Monday.

Mr. Giang said Vietnam has supported many key aspects and humanitarian provisions of the Ottawa Convention and related conventions. Vietnam also actively promotes cooperation and mutual support between nations, including technical and financial assistance in mine clearance and support for landmine victims.

Vietnam places great importance on, and has made significant efforts in, mine clearance activities, developing policies, and implementing concrete measures to care for and support victims. Vietnam acknowledges and greatly appreciates the valuable assistance over the years of many international partners in helping it address its landmine contamination.

Mr. Ly Thuch praised Vietnam's efforts in addressing and overcoming the consequences of landmines and its achievements in cooperating with other countries and international organizations in this field. He noted that Cambodia will host the Fifth Review Conference of the Ottawa Convention from November 25-29 in Siem Reap, and asked Vietnam to send a delegation to the upcoming conference to share its experience in overcoming the aftermath of landmines.
