Vietnam, Laos strengthen special ties

(VOVWORLD) - General Secretary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and President of Laos Bounnhang Vorachith began a three-day official visit to Vietnam on Tuesday.

Speaking at talks after the welcome ceremony for the Lao leader, Party leader Nguyen Phu Trong said: "The visit by the Party General Secretary and President of Laos is of great historical significance. The two countries successfully organized the Friendship Solidarity Year 2017, 55th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties, and 40th anniversary of the Vietnam-Laos Treaty of Amity and Cooperation. The visit enhances the deep sentiment, friendship, special solidarity, and close bonds between the Vietnamese and Lao Parties, States, and peoples.”

The two leaders pledged to work closely to realise more effectively the agreements signed between the two countries’ Parties and States and the Vietnam-Laos joint statement. They stressed the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and overflight in the East Sea. The two sides agreed on the need to settle any disputes via peaceful means and in line with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and the early building of the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

After talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of an agreement on the construction of the Lao National Assembly building.

The same day, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan met the Lao leader.
