Vietnam opposes China's installation of light buoys in Spratly Islands

(VOVWORLD) -The installation of light buoys at entities in the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago without the consent of Vietnam violates Vietnam's sovereignty over this archipelago, and therefore has no legal value, deputy spokesperson of Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang said on Thursday.

Hang responded to a reporter's question about Vietnam's reaction to the Chinese Ministry of Transport’s Maritime Safety Center installing three signaling light buoys at some entities of Vietnam's Truong Sa archipelago.

She said Vietnam has a full legal basis and historical evidence to assert its sovereignty over the Spratly Islands and the Paracel Islands in accordance with international law.

Vietnam requests relevant parties not to take actions to complicate the situation, respect Vietnam's sovereignty, respect international law, the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and preserve the environment of peace, stability and cooperation in the East Sea, the spokesperson said.
