Vietnam, Uzbekistan foster trade cooperation

(VOVWORLD) - Pham Tan Cong, President of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), said the trade revenue of 170 million USD per year between Vietnam and Uzbekistan has not matched the fine political relations and cooperation potential between the two countries.

While working with a visiting Uzbekistan business delegation in Hanoi on Tuesday, Mr. Cong said Vietnam and Uzbekistan still have a lot of room for cooperation. Uzbekistan is the world’s third largest cotton exporter while Vietnam needs to import a large quantity of cotton to serve its textile industry. Vietnam offers many industrial products and consumer items, as well as tea, coffee, and seafood.

Mr. Cong said Uzbekistan is the gateway to a potential market of 500 million people in Central Asia. VCCI and the Uzbekistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry will soon sign a cooperation agreement to promote the establishment of a Vietnam-Uzbekistan Business Council. Uzbekistan will also soon open a Trade Office in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and is planning to operate direct flights between the two countries.

Uzbek Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov and Uzbekistan business leaders are determined to promote economic cooperation with Vietnam, insisting that Vietnamese businesses can find opportunities to cooperate with Uzbekistan in energy, machine manufacturing, chemicals, leather footwear, food, and wood processing.
