Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Diep Kinh Tan yesterday met with his Russia counterpart, Ilia Shestakov. The two leaders informed each other about the demands of the agricultural markets of the two countries stressing that Vietnam and Russia have great potential and favorable conditions to boost two-way trade turnover especially in agro-forestry products and fishery. Moscow expressed its concern over importing major export items of Vietnam such as rice, tea, coffee and seafood and wished to export some of Russia’s major items to Vietnam. The two sides also said that it is essential to defy remaining obstacles to make bilateral cooperation more effective especially as Russia has joined the WTO and Vietnam is going to negotiate a Free Trade Area with the Customs Alliance, which includes Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus.

Deputy Minister Diep Kinh Tan said: "Vietnam and Russia have great potential for trade and agriculture cooperation. But mutual understanding between the two countries is still limited. Russia has not understood Vietnam’s potential in agro-forestry and aqua products and Vietnamese enterprises haven’t paid much attention to the Russian market. Russia is a promising market and not as difficult to penetrate as the US, Japan and EU markets. Vietnam just needs to create high quality products to enter this market".
