Major supermarkets, like Big C, Co.Opmart, and Lotte, adopted this practice early this month after recent reports covered the large volume of plastic waste generated by Vietnamese people and its devastating effect on the environment. This is part of a long-term plan to increase the use of environment-friendly products to replace plastic bags, not just for vegetables.

Le Quoc Thong, Director of the Big C supermarket on Nguyen Thi Thap street, Ho Chi Minh city, said: “The Big C supermarket chain is encouraging shoppers to abandon plastic bags. We will provide them with cartons to carry their purchases home.”

The supermarkets are expecting a varied response from customers.
