World Cup hosts’ embassies meet Vietnam women's team before departure

(VOVWORLD) - The Embassies of New Zealand and Australia in Hanoi hosted a farewell ceremony on Sunday evening for the Vietnamese women's football team, who will soon leave for the final round of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023.

Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Andrew Goledzinowski congratulated the coaching staff and footballers for competing in the tournament.

New Zealand Ambassador to Vietnam Tredene Dobson said she is pleased to welcome the Vietnamese female footballers to New Zealand for the Women's World Cup for the first time. She said she’s sure the "golden girls” of Vietnamese sports will make the Vietnamese people proud.

Head coach Mai Duc Chung thanked the World Cup host countries and said that this is the first time Vietnam's national anthem will be played in the world women's soccer arena.

“Vietnamese women's football has been waiting for this for a long time. Our team are training hard for the tournament. We promise to compete with determination in each match, not only with the spirit of Vietnamese women but also with the spirit of New Zealand and Australian women and women all over the world,” said Chung.

The Vietnamese team will leave Hanoi for New Zealand on Wednesday and will play two friendly matches against New Zealand on July 10 and Spain on July 15. They will play against the US in their World Cup opening match on July 22, against Portugal on July 27, and against the Netherlands on August 1.
