World media support Vietnam’s East Sea stance

(VOVworld) – World media continues to run articles indicating support for Vietnam’s stance and condemning China’s illegal deployment of oil rig Haiyang 981 in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf. On the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue, the Japanese and Vietnamese Defense Ministers agreed that tensions in the East Sea and East China Sea should be resolved peacefully, according to Japan’s Broadcasting Corporation NHK. NHK also reported that Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera was concerned about the sinking of a Vietnamese fishing boat by a Chinese ship in the East Sea and approved of Vietnam’s restrained response.

 In a commentary titled “US Warns China at Asia Security Forum”, Voice of America said Vietnam was restrained in its response to China’s actions and called for resolving tensions through dialogue in line with international law. Vietnam is seeking a solution through the international courts, which is considered the ultimate solution.
Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reported that Australian Defense Minister David Johnston shared US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s concerns at the Shangri-La Dialogue after Hagel accused China of destabilizing actions in the East Sea.  Johnston said Australia would try to persuade China that there is "another path" that does not involve confrontation and tension escalation at sea.
