The presence of Xi and Putin at the meeting would set up a showdown with US President Joe Biden and other leaders, all of whom are set to meet in person for the first time since Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.

On Thursday Widodo and Putin discussed preparations for the G20 summit during a phone call. Last month, President Widodo visited Beijing and held talks with President Xi and both leaders agreed to work together for a successful G20 summit. Indonesia currently holds the rotating presidency of the G20. President Widodo is seeking the role of mediator between Russia and Ukraine.
