Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, was elected president of the People's Republic of China and chairman of the Central Military Commission on Thursday.

Earlier, deputies at the first session of the 12th National People's Congress in Beijing endorsed a cabinet restructuring and streamlining plan which aimed to reduce bureaucracy and make the government more efficient. This will reduce the number of ministries from 27 to 25 to accelerate administrative reform, improve resource allocation efficiency and accountability.
