Prime Minister calls for more resources to help developing countries affected by climate change

(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc delivered a speech at a high-level UN Security Council online conference held Tuesday on "Addressing climate-related risks to international peace and security”. He attended the event at the invitation of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council in February.

Prime Minister Phuc called on the Council, whose top mission is maintaining international peace and security, to lead world collective efforts using a comprehensive approach that is balanced between traditional and non-traditional security challenges. That includes addressing the root causes of conflicts, such as poverty, inequality, power politics, and unilateral interference and coercion. Strict adherence to the Charter of the United Nations and international law must be a norm in foreign relations, said Mr. Phuc.

“Greater resources are needed to support developing countries, the least developed countries, small developing island states, and landlocked countries, which are severely affected by climate change but are short of expertise and resources," according to the Prime Minister.

He went on to say, "The Council should enhance its early warning capacity, bolster its mediation and conflict prevention roles, and work more closely with regional organizations. Fully respecting States’ sovereignty and national ownership is conducive to resolving climate and security threats. The shared interests of vulnerable communities should be central to any national or global strategy and plan to adapt to climate change."

The Prime Minister’s speech at this UN Security Council event exemplifies Vietnam’s contribution to the joint response to climate change, currently the world’s top challenge.
