In his address, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam called for greater efforts in child care, child protection, and education.
He said: “we should thank UNICEF, the United Nations, and all nations, organizations and individuals who have contributed to peace, cooperation, development, prosperity, human development, and child care and protection. Let’s do what we can for the children’s brighter future.”
In 1990 Vietnam was the first country in Asia and second in the world to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Over the last 25 years Vietnam has achieved significant progress in child care and education and implemented 3 national programs of action for children. UNICEF’s Chief Representative in Vietnam Youssouf Abdel Jelil said the international community acknowledges Vietnam’s achievements in reducing poverty, increasing school enrollments, and decreasing maternal and infant mortality rates. He also praised the strong political commitment and leadership of the Vietnamese government in protecting children’s rights.
