Vietnam marks World AIDS Day with National Month of Action

The campaign “For a Hanoi with no new HIV carriers” has been launched in response to National Month of Action on HIV/AIDS Prevention. This year’s action month, which marks World AIDS Day (December 1), aims to achieve 3 goals: no new HIV carriers,
no discrimination and no death of HIV/AIDS. To this end, HIV/AIDS prevention will continue to be integrated in the fight against drug use and prostitution with the participation of the entire society including social and religious organizations, businesses and people living with HIV/AIDS. Vice Secretary General of the Vietnam Red Cross Society, Phung Van Hoan, addressed the launching ceremony in Hanoi on Sunday: “HIV/AIDS can be controlled if each individual is fully aware of preventive measures. Self-protection against HIV infection contributes to protecting community health and reversing the spread of the epidemic.”

By September 2011, Vietnam had reported nearly 200,000 people living with HIV/AIDS. The country is striving to reduce new HIV infections by half by 2015.
