(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam was named 19th among the world’s top 20 host economies for foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2020 with an inflow of 16 billion USD, up five places against previous year’s ranking, according to the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

Singapore and Japan topped the list of countries and territories having investment projects in Vietnam. Singapore contributed 5.64 billion USD in 2020, or 37% of the total, and Japan invested 2.44 billion USD, a surge of 67% year-on-year.

According to UNCTAD's World Investment Report 2021, countries closing their borders due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the postponement of several investment projects, which caused multinational companies re-evaluate new projects.

The UN organization suggested economies boost investment in infrastructure and energy transformation, and focus more on the healthcare sector.
