World media covers General Vo Nguyen Giap’s funeral

(VOVworld) – World media last weekend ran wide coverage of General Vo Nguyen Giap’s funeral.

Reuters reported that the Vietnamese people extended their full reverence to General Giap, who was buried in his hometown in Quang Binh province. A 2-day mourning period for General Giap has ended but the love all Vietnamese people feel for him will live forever.

According to the Associated Press (AP), tens of thousands of mourners stood along the 40-km route from Hanoi’s center to Noi Bai International Airport to pay their last tribute to the legendary hero. People chanted "Long live General Vo Nguyen Giap" and many burst into tears as his coffin passed by on a truck-drawn artillery carriage.

AP’s reporter captured people in tears when they saw off the General and when his coffin passed by the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, which was the last goodbye of General Giap to President Ho Chi Minh.

France’s Le Monde said it was seen through General Giap’s funeral that he is a hero of Vietnam and a general of the people. The prominent general will forever be remembered in the hearts of Vietnamese people as a great Vietnamese person second only to President Ho Chi Minh.

China’s Xinhua and the US’s Wall Street Journal ran articles and photos of General Giap’s state funeral, praising him as a hero of Vietnam’s independence and a mastermind general against the American forces.
