Participants agreed that the East Sea was a strategic position when it comes to international maritime freedom. A political specialist from the George Mason University in the US, Nguyen Manh Hung praised the importance of peace, cooperation and prosperity in the East Sea: “If conflict breaks out, fishermen will suffer from losses. A long term solution must ensure normal fishing activities in their traditional fishing areas. This requires goodwill and restraint from excessive ambition as well as international law compliance.”
The workshop included a display of maps depicting Vietnam’s sovereignty over Paracel and Spratly islands.
