Corruption prevention and combat is the right path for national development.

No step back, no reconciliation

Not going backward and not tolerating corruption has been an order for Party Committees and authorities at all levels. The 13th National Party Congress said it would continue pushing the fight against bureaucracy, corruption, waste, and negativity. The entire political system is striving to implement Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s direction and improve institutions, policies, and mechanisms so that each individual is aware of his own responsibility not to commit corrupt acts.

At a press meeting on Thursday in Hanoi, the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Internal Affairs said that last year the Party Central Committee, the Politburo, and the Secretariat issued 50 documents on Party building and rectification, anti-corruption, and anti-negativity.

Oversight, supervision, investigation, and audits have been carried out simultaneously. Officials who committed violations were asked to resign, dismissed, or replaced. Last year 459 Party members at all levels were disciplined for corruption. Since the beginning of the 13th National Party Congress, 105 centrally managed officials have been disciplined.

The inspection and auditing sector retrieved more than 9.3 billion USD in 2023, nearly 3 times the amount retrieved in 2022. Some particularly big and complicated corruption cases were investigated, prosecuted, and punished.

Since the beginning of the 13th National Party Congress, the Party Central Committee, the Politburo, the Secretariat, and the Central Steering Committee on Preventing and Combating Corruption and Negativity have issued over 100 documents (twice the number in the first half of the 12th National Party Congress) to strengthen Party building and prevent and combat corruption and negativity. The National Assembly passed 24 laws and ordinances and issued many resolutions. The Government and Prime Minister issued many decrees and decisions to improve the efficiency of State management in all fields, and fine-tuned a mechanism to make corruption impossible.

Speaking at the publication of Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s book on anti-corruption, Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Internal Affairs Nguyen Thai Hoc said: “The fight against corruption and negativity has become an irreversible trend. The public has strong confidence in the Party leadership in anti-corruption as well as the role of the General Secretary.”

Public support

Vietnam’s effort and determination to fight corruption has public support. “Anti-corruption has been of great concern to the Party and General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. I see that violations have been strictly and publicly handled. This has strengthened people’s confidence,” said a citizen.

Jung Rina, a reporter from the Republic of Korea, said: "Vietnam is at an important historical moment to take a giant leap forward. Vietnam's fight against corruption and negativity is being fiercely directed by the Party. Anti-corruption is a major task, an irreversible trend, as the General Secretary has said. Vietnam really needs to fight against corruption, not only for economic development, but for the future."

Anti-corruption results show the political will of the Party and State, that there is no area that’s off-limits, no exceptions made, and no one who is exempt from prosecution.
