(VOVWORLD) - Members of the Da Nang City Women's Union have done a great job of promoting and implementing environmental protection movements. Some of their effective movements involve collecting and recycling waste, making use of recycled products, growing vegetables, and keeping the city environment clean and green.
Every Sunday morning, members of the Thanh Vinh 4 Women's Union in Da Nang’s Son Tra district gather to collect plastic and paper waste. Each family in the neighborhood puts plastic bottles, beer bottles, and waste paper in a basket in front of their house for the Union’s members to collect, sort, and sell. All profits go to support disadvantaged members of the Union and disadvantaged students. Items that can’t be sold are gathered recycled as school supplies such as pencil cases. Pham Thi Hoa, Head of the Thanh Vinh 4 Women's Union said this movement, which was launched one year ago, has brought many benefits to the local community.
"We come to each family to collect waste for recycling and encourage our members to make school supplies to help them earn some money. We’ve earned 1300 USD from this effort in one year. We also encourage our members to use a reusable basket when going to the market and give them free shopping bags to protect the environment from disposable plastic," said Hoa.
Many empty lots in Tho Quang ward, Son Tra district, have been converted into vegetable gardens. The Tho Quang ward Women’s Union has 3 of its members take care of the gardens and pays them each 90 USD per month.
Da Nang has created many green-living models involving over the past years by 900 groups with 16,000 members. Some have proved to be very effective, including “Sorting out rubbish at each household”; “Keeping streets and pavements clean”; “Each rubbish tip buys one green tree”; and “Environmental dust bin.” 40 waste bin have been installed along the beach, at historical sites, parks, residential areas, and schools.
Tang Hoang Hon Tham, Deputy Chairwoman of Da Nang City’s Women Union, said: "We plan to implement more green-living models in the future, organize more waste collecting sessions on Sundays and expand the “say no to plastic waste” and the “sorting out rubbish” models. We are instructing local people to make compost from their organic waste. We’ll do our best to expand the effective models and promote a green lifestyle to make Da Nang cleaner and greener."
