Enhancing Vietnam, China parliamentary cooperation

(VOVworld) – National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung left Hanoi on December 23 for a 4-day official visit to China, aiming to enhance legislative ties and comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. The visit is at the invitation of Zhang Dejiang, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China.

Since relation normalization in 1991, Vietnam-China relations have developed rapidly in all sectors. High-level visits have been organized regularly. Cooperation among ministries, sectors, and localities has been enhanced. National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung’s official visit to China is an important diplomatic activity in 2015.

Effective cooperation between two legislative agencies

Vietnam and China have promoted cooperation between their Parties, governments, and National Assemblies. The two legislative sectors have regularly exchanged visits to improve cooperation and share experience and information.

National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong visited China in 2012 and NA Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu took a trip to China as President of the Vietnam Peace Committee in September 2012.

In 2013 Li Jianguo, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee, and Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, visited Vietnam. Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a speech on peace and friendship at Vietnam’s National Assembly during his visit to Vietnam in November 2015.

Maintaining bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership

Leaders of the two countries have a common awareness of orientations and measures to boost stable, sustainable, and healthy relations. 2015 is an important year in Vietnam-China relations as the two countries celebrate the 65th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. Trade and economic cooperation have increased, with trade revenues of 58 billion USD in 2014 and 55 billion USD in the first 10 months of 2015. China has invested in 1,200 projects in Vietnam with a total registered capital of 8.4 billion USD, ranking 9th of 105 countries and territories investing in Vietnam. About 1.4 million Chinese tourists visited Vietnam. Bilateral cooperation in science, technology, education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges have been enhanced.

Despite continuing differences, the situation along their border and in the Tonkin Gulf has been stable. The East Sea issue has been complicated, particularly China’s construction of artificial islands in the Truong Sa archipelago. But both countries have agreed to hold dialogues to resolve their differences.

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung’s China visit is of great importance to Vietnam-China relations and Vietnam’s external affairs.
