The UN was established on October 24, 1945. It is a prestigious international organization that involves virtually every independent nation and territory. The UN has steadily broadened its influence in all fields to benefit all nations.

An indispensable foundation of a peaceful world

From an initial membership of 51, the UN has grown to include 193 member countries. It has become a well-organized system with 6 main bodies, 20 specialized organizations, 5 socio-economic committees in different regions, and funds and programs in a wide range of sectors, including preventing and resolving conflicts; disarmament and non-proliferation; combating terrorism; protecting refugees; protecting the environment; sustainable development; promoting democracy, human rights, gender equality, and socio-economic growth; and responding to climate change. The UN is recognized as an important entity in international politics and an indispensable foundation for a more peaceful, prosperous, and equal world.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has made important contributions to enhancing the UN’s role in the three pillars of peace and security, development, and human rights. He has initiated numerous solutions to handle regional conflicts, reform the peacekeeping force, promote disarmament, and mobilize international efforts to combat terrorism, respond to climate change, reduce poverty, prevent epidemics and natural disasters, implement the Millennium Development Goals, and build a post-2015 development agenda.

Secretary General Ban has a good rapport with Vietnam and has contributed to enhancing the UN-Vietnam relationship. His 2nd visit to Vietnam takes place as the UN and Vietnam are preparing to celebrate the UN’s 70th founding anniversary.

Vietnam, a proactive and effective member of the UN

Vietnam joined the UN in September 1977 and since then bilateral relations have broadened. UN and Vietnamese leaders have worked together on implementation of the UN program from 2011-2015 and Vietnam’s socio-economic development strategy from 2011-2020. Vietnam has effectively engaged in a number of UN activities, successfully fulfilled its term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (2008-2009 term) and as an active member of the UN Human Rights Council (2014-2016 term). Vietnam is now involved in UN peacekeeping activities. The One UN House in Vietnam is an example of Vietnam’s contributions to UN reform.

Vietnam-UN cooperation is typical of development cooperation between the UN and its members and the UN’s role in promoting international relations to resolve socio-economic, cultural, and humanitarian issues. The UN-Vietnam cooperation and Vietnam’s responsible and constructive commitments to UN activities have been acknowledged by the international community and UN agencies.

2015 will see several activities celebrating UN milestones, including the UN’s 70th anniversary, finalizing the post-2015 development agenda, and hopefully, reaching an international agreement on climate change response later this year.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s visit to Vietnam aims to foster multifaceted cooperation between the UN and Vietnam and exchange ideas on global peace, security, and development. This will be an opportunity for Vietnam to affirm its external policies of independence, self-reliance, and multilateralization and diversification of international relations. Vietnam advocates actively and responsibly engaging in UN activities, contributing to international peace, stability, and development.
