Phu Yen province combats IUU fishing

(VOVWORLD) - To implement the European Commission’s recommendations to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, Phu Yen province has strictly managed fishing vessels through exit and entry procedures concerning activities at sea. Since 2019, the province has not recorded any cases of fishing vessels violating foreign waters.

Fisherman Le Van Tuan recently returned to Dong Tac Fishing Port in Tuy Hoa city after a long trip at sea. He has carefully documented all necessary details, including his fishing schedule, the types of fish caught, and the quantities.

Tuan said: “Fishermen are committed to following the law, ensuring they fish within Vietnamese waters and avoid encroaching on foreign waters. This is crucial for Vietnam to have the European Commission's yellow card lifted. Fishermen in Phu Yen pledge to full compliance with the law. If the yellow card is removed, the prices of seafood will increase and the fishermen will gain more profit."

Phu Yen provincial authorities and coastal localities closely monitor and oversee activities of fishing vessels at sea through a trip monitoring system. The administration has coordinated with the Coast Guard Region 3 Command to strengthen patrols and inspections, and to manage  fishing vessels and fishermen working at sea to promptly detect and handle violations.

Ha Vien, Director of the Management Board of Phu Yen fishing board, said: “Public awareness of IUU fishing has improved. The fishermen comply with the declaration rules. For example, one hour before docking at the port, they report to the Fishing Port Management Agency to monitor the unloading of aquatic products and carry out traceability. The trip monitoring device runs around the clock while they are at sea.”

Phu Yen province has over 2,800 fishing boats. While at sea, they are overseen via the trip monitoring system so the authorities can promptly send warning to those travelling close to the maritime boundary or surpassing it.
