President Truong Tan Sang noted that 69 years ago in the autumn of 1945, the Vietnamese people, under the flag of the Communist Party of Vietnam, carried out the great August Revolution to break the chains of colonial and feudal regimes, recapture national independence, and found the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. On September 2, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh announced to the world the establishment of an independent Vietnamese state. In the past 70 years the Vietnamese people have overcome countless hardships to defeat invaders, defend freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, build the nation, and improve living conditions.

National construction and defense tasks

President Truong Tan Sang said that in a context of globalization, characterized by complex relations of cooperation and competition and clashes of policies, economies, and cultures, the survival and prosperity of each country is no longer a matter for that country alone.

Such a context poses both opportunities and challenges for all countries, but particularly small countries, in safeguarding their interests, independence, freedom, unity, and territorial integrity. The President said Vietnam has to promote internal strength for faster and more sustainable growth; all Vietnamese people must exercise vigilance and resolve to firmly defend national independence, freedom, national unity, and territorial integrity in any circumstance. He confirmed that that is the sacred task of the current generation.

Power of national unity

President Truong Tan Sang pointed out that protecting national independence, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity requires a long vision, staunch will, and wise and flexible strategy to deal with global changes.

President Ho Chi Minh said: “With strong roots, trees have strong leaves. We gain success on the firm foundation of the people”. National hero and world cultural figure Nguyen Trai said the people’s unity is as powerful as water. In order to overcome all obstacles and defend national sovereignty, the bonds of flesh and blood, life and death between the Party and the people must be nurtured and developed.

Party building is as important as national leadership

September, 2014, marks 45 years since the Vietnamese Party, state, and people carried out President Ho Chi Minh’s Testament. In a message to celebrate this event, President Truong Tan Sang highlighted the need to study and follow President Ho Chi Minh’s teaching that “the foremost task is to strengthen the Party; to make every party member and party cell strive to fulfill their assigned tasks and wholeheartedly serve the people; to keep the Party transparent to deserve a leader and servant of the people.”

All Party committees, organizations, and members have to implement the resolution of the 4th plenum of the 11th Party Central Committee on urgent matters in Party building and the Politburo’s Directive on following President Ho Chi Minh’s moral example. At the same time, efforts must be made to intensify the struggle against any degradation of political ideals, morality, or lifestyle among officials, Party members, and state employees while implementing the new Constitution, towards building a State that is of the people, by the people, and for the people.

President Truong Tan Sang concluded that by upholding the spirit and glorious tradition of the great August Revolution and continuing to study and carry out the testament of President Ho Chi Minh, with solidarity and great effort, the Vietnamese people are determined to build a more prosperous and lasting nation.
