Strengthening Mekong-Japan cooperation

(VOVworld)- A Vietnamese delegation led by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung left Hanoi on Thursday for Tokyo, Japan to attend the 4th Mekong-Japan Summit. Vietnam wants to show its determination to join other Mekong countries and Japan in boosting cooperation for prosperity, stability, and sustainable development in the region and seize an opportunity to enhance its strategic partnership with Japan.

Prime Minister Dung and leaders from Japan, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand will review implementation of the 63-point Action Program, the Mekong-Japan Economic and. Industrial Cooperation Initiative (MJ-CI), and the Green Mekong Initiative, and discuss ways to promote Mekong-Japan cooperation in the 2013-2015 period.

Since the Mekong-Japan cooperation mechanism was put in place in 2007, Vietnam has carried out many projects within its framework, including projects to build the Lach Huyen seaport in Hai Phong, a training center, and a logistics training center in Vietnam, a project on customs sector risk control in the Mekong region and a project to build expressways.

In addition, Vietnam has joined cross-cultural exchange programs in Japan to help promote mutual understanding between the two countries and other Mekong nations. At this summit, Prime Minister Dung will deliver an important speech on Vietnam’s priority areas in relation to the management and sustainable use of Mekong River resources within the Mekong-Japan cooperation framework.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to introduce Vietnam’s initiative on the development of an integrated transportation system to better utilize river networks and assist road and sea transportation. The initiative is expected to improve the road system, and traffic corridors and ease the overloading of major traffic junctions boosting tourism and trade while protecting the environment by reducing vehicle gas emission.

At this fourth Mekong-Japan Summit, PM Dung and his delegation want to affirm Vietnam’s role in the regional cooperation mechanism and enhance friendship with other Mekong countries and Japan. While in Tokyo, Prime Minister Dung will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Noda Yoshiko, deliver a speech at Japan’s National Press Club, join activities hosted by the Japanese Imperial Family, and meet with the Japanese Economic League (Keidanren) and the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He will also meet leaders of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and several of Japan’s major economic groups.
