Over the past few days, the Unity festival has been held in various places across the country including Hung Yen, Ha Noi, Thai Binh, and Ho Chi Minh City. The festival featured art performances and seminars on patriotic emulation movements and building cultural lifestyles in community. Outstanding examples in these movements were honored on this occasion. Leaders of the Party, State, Government, National Assembly, representatives of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, and the public attended the event.

Unity is a national tradition

National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said at the Unity Festival in Hanoi that “Great unity is the key to gathering strength from classes creating national strength and enabling Vietnam to gain from this victory to another”. In Thai Binh province, Hung continued stressing that unity creates national strength: “Great unity is not only promoted in a small village but nationwide, among all people. All Vietnamese people are united to improve their lives, to learn and develop. Continuing the Vietnamese unity tradition, President Ho Chi Minh and the Communist Party of Vietnam proclaimed: “Unity, Unity, Great Unity, Success, Success, Great Success”.

Unity in renovation

The Vietnam Fatherland Front is an organization that connects, inherits and promotes the spirit of unity by encouraging people to exercise their right of mastery, and respond to Party guidelines and State policies and patriotic emulation and other social movements. During the renovation process, the Vietnam Fatherland Front launched several movements to unite people -movements on economic development, poverty reduction, showing gratitude, humanitarian activities and promoting Vietnamese goods. These movements have created community unity serving national construction and defense. The Fatherland Front, Party Committees and administrations at all levels supported a movement to follow President Ho Chi Minh’s moral example which inspired the public to follow President Ho Chi Minh’s thoughts on national unity and motivated people to unite. The Fatherland Front has collected public opinions on revisions to the 1992 Constitution, participated in the National Assembly election, and responded to the Party resolution on Party building.

Unity in connection with democracy

With achievements in promoting national unity over the past few years, Nguyen Van Pha, Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front’s Central Committee, said that success of the unity movements was thanks to effective promotion by Party Committees and local authorities of democracy at grassroots level. Mr. Pha said that the people’s role was promoted in negotiating, supervising and deciding issues in residential areas:“The strict and close leadership of Party committees and the responsible management of local authorities are the most important factors. People’s opinions and complaints are dealt with as a way to promote democracy”.

The community plays an important role in promoting national unity. Each effective movement at the grassroots level is an important factor in making patriotic emulation movements successful. During this year’s Unity Festival, National Assembly Chairman Hung said it is very important to build the national unity bloc from the grassroots level.
