The President’s visits to Chile and Peru delivered a clear message to the international community, particularly Latin America and the Caribbean, that Vietnam has a consistent foreign policy and appreciates nations like Chile and Peru with which it has strong traditional ties.

During the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week, Vietnam reiterated its commitment to addressing regional and global challenges, advancing international economic integration, and generating new momentum for regional growth.

Chile, Peru show special attention to Vietnam

Peru, the host of the 2024 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week, extended a warm and respectful welcome to the Vietnamese delegation.

In recognition of his leadership, President Luong Cuong was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of “The Sun of Peru", and the Key of the Capital – Lima – which are the two highest distinctions given by Peru to foreign leaders.

During Mr. Cuong’s visits, many agreements were signed to create a stronger foundation for cooperation with Chile and Peru. These included the Vietnam-Chile Joint Statement, the Joint Statement on Strengthening Vietnam-Peru Bilateral Relations, and 10 documents on defense, agriculture, culture, and trade promotion cooperation. The aim of these agreements is to strengthen the Vietnam-Chile Comprehensive Partnership and the multifaceted Vietnam-Peru cooperation.

The visits fostered political trust and friendly relations between Vietnamese leaders and leaders of Chile and Peru, created new cooperation opportunities, and expanded cooperation into promising sectors such as innovation, green transition, digital transformation, climate action, energy, oil, gas, and telecommunications.

Vietnam and Peru discussed the possibility of Vietnam establishing a diplomatic representative office in Lima to further enhance bilateral ties.

Vietnam's contributions to APEC acknowledged

At the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week, President Cuong participated in all major activities, held bilateral meetings with leaders of key partner nations, and engaged with presidents and CEOs of major corporations. In his speech at the APEC CEO Summit, attended by 1,000 regional and global business leaders, the President made breakthrough recommendations of strategic importance to promote APEC’s role in strengthening international economic connectivity and coping with challenges. He highlighted Vietnam’s dynamism entering a new era – an era of rapid growth and appeal as a premier destination for international investment.

President Luong Cuong said: “Vietnam’s remarkable economic success is due in part to the trust international businesses and investors have placed in our country. I hope you will continue to accompany Vietnam on this journey. Vietnam’s robust development will create numerous opportunities for domestic and foreign enterprises in the trade, industry, agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, logistics, and high-tech sectors. The Vietnamese market offers unique advantages for global investors.”

President Cuong reaffirmed Vietnam's commitment to its role as host of APEC 2027 and as a member of the APEC Structural Reform Agenda group for the 2026–2030 period. Vietnam will actively contribute to and effectively implement APEC’s strategic orientations and visions, he said.

"As a responsible member of the international community, Vietnam will continue to work closely with other APEC members to advance shared goals and visions. Building on the successes of previous APEC years, Vietnam will carefully prepare for APEC 2027, striving for a peaceful, prosperous, sustainable, and inclusive Asia-Pacific region," said the Vietnamese President.

President Cuong's participation in the APEC 2024 Economic Leaders’ Week and his visits to Chile and Peru are a major step forward in Vietnam’s foreign policy, giving momentum to deeper, more effective cooperation with Chile and Peru and underlining Vietnam’s greater role and position in multilateral forums like APEC. By working closely with other member economies, Vietnam is helping to realize APEC’s key initiatives in the coming years.
