Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc speaks at the opening of the 37th ASEAN Summit

Vietnam has been applauded for successfully hosting several international events including the 41^st AIPA General Assembly in September, which was held online for the first time in its 43-year history. The Speakers of Thailand’s National Assembly, Norway’s Parliament, and Lower House of Morocco congratulated Vietnam and National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan for successfully organizing the event.

Vietnam’s capacity in hosting international events has been tested since early this year when it assumed the Presidency of the UN Security Council in January, ASEAN Chair for 2020 and the role of Non-Permanent Member of the UN Security Council in the 2020-2021 tenure. Russia and many other countries praised Vietnam’s organization of the meeting on  ASEAN’s role in cooperation between the UN and regional and sub-regional organizations.

Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu praised Vietnam’s role as ASEAN Chair in organizing the ASEAN+3 Special Meeting on COVID-19 Response in April. At a meeting of the ASEAN-Switzerland Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee in October, a representative of Switzerland praised Vietnam for coordinating and maintaining ASEAN’s internal and external cooperation activities and organizing many ASEAN meetings in 2020.

Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Ibnu Hadi told VOV: “Due to COVID-19, meetings have been held online since April. During the last year, ASEAN has signed several agreements on internal cooperation and external cooperation with its main partners thanks to Vietnam’s chairmanship.”

Its successful hosting of international events proves Vietnam’s capacity, sense of responsibility and contributions to shared values of the world community.
